UK appoints interim chief medical officer

Professor Dame Sally Davies will take on the role of interim chief medical officer when Sir Liam Donaldson retires as the UK's chief medical officer at the end of May.
Prof Davies has been actively involved in NHS Research and Development from its establishment and as director general developed the organisation into the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
She is also a board member of the Office for Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research (OSCHR), and chairs the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC).
Prof Sally will continue to serve as director general of research and development and chief scientific adviser for the Department of Health and NHS.
Meanwhile a permanent replacement for Sir Liam will be sought over summer.
